Top Reasons Why There Is Increased Taxi Fares In Uganda
Uganda has both public and private taxis. Locals use the public means to get to various parts of the country or travel around cities like Kampala.
The capital is the starting point for multiple trips to cities upcountry.
Some of these are Mbale, Jinja, Gulu, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Soroti, Lira, Arua, Bushenyi, Isingiro, Masindi, Mityana, Kitgum, Hoima to name but a few.
Passengers from the airports like Ebb use special taxicabs for onward transportation to residential places, conference centers, or tourist spots.
If you need a ride, don’t hesitate to use any of the two. There is an increase in the rates charged for a trip. Here are the reasons why operators are deciding to introduce new prices for various routes.
Introduction of the Vehicle’s ownership taxi license
With the need to expand the base for taxi collection in Uganda, the ministry of finance in partnership with the Uganda revenue authority is introducing annual license fees to be paid by everyone who owns a car.
Increase in fuel prices
A business without profit can’t last for long. Therefore if there is any increment in the gas charges, it is not surprising to find taxi companies with upgraded rates for multiple journeys around Uganda.
Decreased passenger seating capacity
The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic changed everything and social distancing is amongst the SOPs encouraged by the World Health Organization.
After the lock-down in Uganda, the responsible authorities introduced new measures on transport.
All vehicles were ordered to carry half of their seating capacity. Like public taxis that carried 14 passengers, now take seven.
One seat on each row is left empty to ensure social distance. Right now the seven customers meet fares for the 14 commuters.
