Africa to Get 220 Million Covid-19 Vaccine Doses
Once the Covid-19 vaccine is approved Africa will get about 220 million doses, this is said by Richard Mihigo, the Area Manager of World Health Organization Africa program.
Source shows that the first batch will prioritize the vulnerable groups and front-line healthcare workers. WHO says that the distribution will depend on the population of each country. Africa as a continent is made up of fifty-four countries with a total population of more than 1.3 billion people.
Mr Mihigo revealed that all the African countries have expressed interest in the process of discovering the Covid-19 vaccine. COVAX, the global vaccine initiative has plans to purchase and distribute about two billion doses of approved Covid-19 vaccines by the end of 2021. Currently, the organization has nine vaccine candidates that are being tested and assessed globally.
According to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), two of the nine candidates are being tested in Africa and positive results are expected after the required time. More trials are to be made using different species including human beings until a perfect immune response is approved.
