New Air Cargo Center Opens at Entebbe International Airport
As we talk, the newly constructed cargo complex at Entebbe Airport is ready to handle business. This center has a storage capacity for 100,000 tonnes of cargo. It is put up to create more space for the ever-growing consignment.
In 2019, Entebbe Airport handled 64,000 tonnes of cargo but reduced to 59,000 tonnes in 2020 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 Virus. After the lock-down, it increased in 2021 to 67,000 tonnes. This structure is part of the 200 million dollars upgrade project for EBB Airport.
It was financed by the Exim Bank of China. The China communication construction company, the mastermind behind the expansion works handed over the finished complex to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority for further commissioning. The launching event will take place in April.
For now, cargo handling works in the old department have been moved to the new structure to pave way for the construction of another passenger terminal. Two cargo handling companies at EBB (NAS and DAS) will be charged to carry out their business in this area.
It is now very busy as cargo pours in and out. Different officers at UCCA welcomed this building, and it’s an addition for clear progress of work at the airport.
