Kampala Northern Bypass Highway
With a total length of 22.53km, Kampala Northern bypass is one of Uganda’s traffic-free roads. It is a great option if you need to escape the car congestion in the center of Kampala city. It starts at Busega interchange and winds through areas in the northern suburbs of Kampala up to Namboole, Bweyogerere.
It was built by Mota Engil, a Portuguese road construction company. Funded by the European Union and the Uganda government. The construction works started in 2004 and ended in 2022.
It opened to car traffic in 2009. Moreover, this path has five interchanges between the start and endpoint. These are highlighted below.
Sentema
When coming from Busega, it is about 4.5 kilometers up to Sentema interchange. From this point, you can continue with the bypass or join the Sentema road and reach Sentema town, town centers like Lubya, Lugala, Bulange, Nakulabye, and more.
Namungona
After Sentema, next is Namungona interchange. From this turning point, you can join hoima road and drive to areas like Nansana, Kiboga, or drive to Namungona town, Kasubi, Mengo, Lubaga, Wandegeya name but a few.
Bwaise
From Bwaise interchange, you can join the Kampala – Bombo – Luwero – Masindi – Gulu roadway or connect back to places like Wandegeya, Makerere, Nankulabye, Namirembe, and a lot more.
Kalerwe
This point connects you to Gayaza road, a path that can lead you up to Kayunga, Mukono, and Jinja. If not, you can use the Kalerwe road to drive back up to Kubiri roundabout near Pastor Kakande’s church and see your way to various places in Kampala.
From Kalerwe, it is possible to use Mawanda road and reach Acacia mall in Kamwokya, Acacia villa hotel, and other notable spots.
Kisasi
After Kalerwe, the next stop is Kisasi, a changing point which is near Ndere center. From this interchange, you can join Kisasi – Kyanja path and reach other places like Kulambiro, rejoin Gayaza road.
You can also use this point to drive up to Ntinda, Nakawa, Kamwokya, Naguru, Kiwatule, Najjera, Bukoto and more. Moreover, from Kisasi interchange you find the Naalya roundabout which connects Namugongo road, the Kiwatule route, and the main northern bypass.
From here, the bypass leads you straight to Namboole to rejoin the Jinja roadway. Namugongo route winds through places like Kyaliwajjala, up to Seeta to reconnect with the main Jinja road.
